Cannabis for Pain Relief in Seniors

In addition to the overall pleasure that can come from getting high, cannabis can be helpful in managing chronic pain in seniors through its active compounds, cannabinoids, which interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in our bodies. This system helps regulate many functions, including pain.

Many older stoners remain physically active on a day to day basis, which is incredibly valuable for extending your healthy and enjoyable years. Those who are taking part in a consistent regimen of weights and cardio are likely to have ongoing soreness / discomfort in different parts of their bodies. Cannabis can provide an effective source of pain relief.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) published a report: Medical Cannabis Treatment For Chronic Pain (Dec. 2022):

Chronic pain is a growing widespread health concern across the United States. According to the CDC, chronic pain affects approximately 1 in every 5 Americans, with an estimated cost of $560 billion for medical care and disability.[1] Chronic pain is a multifaceted condition that induces physical, mental, and emotional stress on the body. Therefore, treatment of chronic pain also requires a multifaceted approach, including pharmacological, non-pharmacological, and interventional measures. In light of the recent opioid epidemic, medicinal cannabis has gained traction as a possible treatment for chronic pain. As more states legalize the use of medical marijuana, healthcare professionals must understand the mechanism of action, indications, contraindications, role, and controversy of medicinal marijuana in treating chronic pain.

Even Martha Stewart is in on the fun.

But seriously, the use of cannabis for pain relief dates back to ancient times. Especially for seniors, it can provide a viable alternative to traditional pharmaceuticals, which often come with unwanted side effects.
