The only thing worse than an empty vape cartridge is one that is not empty, but clogged to the point that it doesn’t work. You may be able to suck with the best of them, but an air hole lodged with cannabis oil or other debris can make the airway impenetrable.
Clogged THC vape cartridges are impacted by the viscosity of the oil…Princeton University defines viscosity as, “ a measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow. It describes the internal friction of a moving fluid.”
What causes cannabis vape cartridges to clog?
- Cold temperatures can cause thickening of the oil which can lead to clogging
- Physical obstructions in the mouthpiece
- Condensation buildup in the airway
Here are some ways to lessen the likelihood of encountering a clogged vape of your favorite strain:
- Warm the oil with the preheat function on your vape pen (if available), making it less viscous and helping it flow better..
- If the mouthpiece is clogged, try using a toothpick to remove obstructions.
- Store your cartridge upright, in a cool, dry place to keep the oil at the right consistency.
- This one is easy…use consistently: Regular use can prevent the oil from hardening and clogging.
- Continuous cleaning can also prevent clogs from forming. Use a small pin or needle to gently clear the airway. Be mindful not to damage the coil. You could also use isopropyl alcohol on a Q-tip to gently clean the mouthpiece and airway.
- Draw Gently: Sucking too hard can pull too much oil into the airway and cause clogs.
Vape cartridges and their functionality can be suspect at times. If you have a new vape that’s immediately clogged, then it may make sense to return it to the dispensary that you purchased it from. Otherwise, follow the above suggestions to help ensure a clog-free marijuana vaping experience.
